Join in on the fun with the Malcolm X Read-A-Thon!
....now through December 12th (reading counts from 11/30-12/12)

Malcolm X Elementary is the largest elementary school in Berkeley. We're unique in having drama, dance, art and music classes for most grades, funded in part by the PTA. Classroom teachers and enrichment teachers collaborate so that one curriculum complements and reinforces the other. All grades have drama classes for part of the year. Besides performing themselves, students have multiple opportunities throughout the year to enjoy and learn from other class performances. Before graduating from Malcolm X 5th graders get to be involved in all aspects of a drama production, from acting to lighting to directing. Plays are original works created by our drama teacher who has taught at Malcolm X for 10 years. The PTA also helps to fund our wonderful literacy and math coaches, field trips to play and art museums and the San Francisco Bay boat trip, and classroom supplies.

Ask friends, family and neighbors to pledge money for each minute you read, or a flat amount, like $20 or $40.

Prizes!! The top 2 readers from each class will win $10 and $5 gift cards. The class with the Highest Participation rate (turning in reading logs and obtaining at least one pledge per student) and the class with the Most Minutes Read also win prizes!

Look for Read-alouds on Zoom with Principal Hunt, our new VP Linda Morgan, drama teacher Ms. Castle, Malcolm X parent Sara Kaplan and more! And please mark your calendars for Parent Literacy Workshops hosted by our Literacy Coaches - Tues. Dec 1 (TK-2nd grades) at 6:30pm, and Thurs. Dec 3 (3rd-5th) at 6:30pm.

Donate Books! The Read-A-Thon book drive is happening now until Friday, December 4th! We are looking for fiction, non-fiction, graphic novels, picture books, early readers and chapter books. Bring donated books to the cart by the main office. Please only donate books in the condition you would want your child to receive. Thank you!
