About this fundraiser:
WHO WE ARE
Literacy Volunteers Winchester Area (LVWA) is a 40-year-old nonprofit in Winchester, VA providing services to the City of Winchester, Frederick County, and Clarke County residents. We are a dedicated team of staff and qualified volunteer tutors who assist adults in building their literacy skills to be better prepared for today’s job market, to get a promotion, and to be more engaged in the community. We also offer family literacy programs through the Winchester Campaign for Grade-Level Reading.
WHAT WE DO
We currently provide one-on-one and small group tutoring for adults in the following areas: Adult Basic Education skills, Citizenship Preparation, Computer skills, English Language Learners (ELL), Financial literacy, Health literacy, and other areas. We also partner with Just Neighbors, an organization offering low-cost, family-based immigration legal services. In 2021, LVWA expanded to family literacy by launching the Winchester Campaign for Grade-Level Reading, a collaborative effort of over thirty local organizations to increase third-grade reading proficiency. The Winchester Campaign is part of a national effort by foundations, nonprofit partners, business leaders, government agencies, states, and communities nationwide to ensure that more children in low-income families succeed in school and graduate prepared for college, a career, and active citizenship.
HOW WE GET BOOKS INTO THE COMMUNITY
LVWA is the managing partner for Winchester Little Libraries, a network of thirteen community libraries in the City of Winchester where anyone can find a book to read or leave a book to share with others. LVWA also serves as the local affiliate for The Dolly Parton Imagination Library program, where children ages birth to five receive free age-appropriate books in the mail every month. There are no eligibility requirements other than living in our service area of the City of Winchester, Frederick, or Clarke Counties. Although it is free to families, LVWA provides the cost of mailing the books—at $25 per child per year, LVWA spends approximately $75,000 annually for almost 3,000 children enrolled in the program!
