About this fundraiser:

Thank you for your donation to John Muir Elementary School. Your contribution will lessen the impact of massive unprecedented budget cuts on its high-risk and most vulnerable students. These severe budget cuts are directly the result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Based in the Western Addition neighborhood of San Francisco, John Muir Elementary serves 270 students pre-K through 5th grade. Almost all of John Muir students are Black and Brown and 95% of the students qualify for Free and Reduced Lunch. 55% of the Muir students are Latino and vastly English Language Learners, 40% are African American, and 5% are of Arabic, Asian, and White descent. 20% of the John Muir student body are currently homeless living in shelters, and more are housing insecure.

John Muir currently has one Social Worker and one Family Parent Liaison, and a half time nurse to support the needs of its student population. These roles act as wraparound care for families and often navigate students into stable housing, therapy and mental health care services, and basic health care services. Due to statewide budget cuts, many of these positions are expected to be cut in the upcoming school year. The library budget is already completely eliminated for the 2020-2021 school year.

Also as a direct result of the Covid-19 pandemic, John Muir Elementary is lacking modern teaching tools such as Chromebooks. The school owned Chromebooks were passed out and internet hotspots were connected at the start of school closures to ensure students had access to distance learning during the Covid-19 pandemic. Computing skills are necessary for tomorrow's future and these technologies are needed in the classroom.

The funds from this fundraiser will go to make up the library deficit as well as provide the technological teaching tools for the student body, the necessary health care and basic needs that many of these students need to survive and thrive.

Fun fact about John Muir ES: their principal, Sara Liebert, was an NCNCA women’s racer for 8 years and continues to be an active cyclist and supporter of our organization! Please consider donating to this public elementary school in San Francisco, California and support our local youth!
