Ana Correia

Hello!

I am participating in "Small Steps for Small Cell" in honor of José S. Correia to raise money for cancer research.

From June 9th to July 9th I will run/walk as many miles as possible. In return, I'm asking for a donation for each mile that I run/walk. I am also accepting general donations of any amount. 100% of the funds will be donated to the José dos Santos Correia Memorial Fund.

Also, feel free to join! Have people within your network pledge a certain amount of money for however many miles you walk/run! Please contact us at smallstepsforsmallcell@gmail.com for more information on how to get involved!

About this fundraiser:

In July of 2020, José S. Correia passed away after a courageous and private battle with cancer. To honor his legacy, we're raising money to continue research for his rare form of small cell cancer.

José was always involved in athletics and fitness. His passion for living a healthy lifestyle was evident as he often jogged around Hamden and the surrounding towns in the New Haven area. We decided to do a run/walk to honor his passion.

This fund raiser will raise money in support of the Yale Gastrointestinal Tumor Biorepository.

Yale is at the forefront of advancing cancer research and forging solutions to achieve better outcomes for cancer patients. One critical resource that is fueling our advancements is the Yale Gastrointestinal Tumor Biorepository ( YGTB) . It is an extraordinary, shared resource of Yale Cancer Center designed to support impactful clinical, translational, and basic science research with relevant, high-quality, and well-an-notated biospecimens. YGTB is one of the most important assets Yale Cancer Center has to help researchers fully understand the molecular pathways of many cancers, including rare cancers such as high- grade neuroendocrine tumors, as well as guide and develop treatments.

Since its inception in 2012, the YGTB has collected and stored over 1,000 patient samples from 13 distinct disease sites. In the past three years alone, the YGTB has supported research of 10 Yale investigators and has provided the repository infrastructure for sever~ multi- institutional efforts, including clinical trials. The samples acquired are carefully stored in a long- term, permissive state, facilitating use in future research that could not be envisioned at the time of acquisition. Although resource- intensive, this approach to collection and storage has enabled an enormous range of projects across the spectrum of cancer and noncancer diseases. These projects have ranged from examining the genetics of precancerous cysts of the pancreas, to biomarker discovery, mapping response to chemotherapy in advanced cancers, development of new cancer model systems and cell lines, and gene expression in muscular dystrophy.

Investments made in the YGTB have resulted in the dissemination of new knowledge and have helped Yale's gastrointestinal cancer research team generate data and findings that have built a strong foundation for external grant applications to sustain future research for investigators beyond Yale Cancer Center.

Your philanthropy is critical to accelerating the research of Dr. Kortmansky and his team and advancing their goals to improve the outcomes of patients fighting gastrointestinal and other cancers. Thank you for your interest in partnering with us!
